Praying With Power

1 Kings 18:41 Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go and enjoy a good meal! For I hear a mighty rainstorm coming!” 42 So Ahab prepared a feast. But Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and fell to the ground and prayed. 43 Then he said to his servant, “Go and look out toward the sea.”The servant went and looked, but he returned to Elijah and said, “I didn’t see anything.” Seven times Elijah told him to go and look, and seven times he went. 44 Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a hand rising from the sea.”Then Elijah shouted, “Hurry to Ahab and tell him, ‘Climb into your chariot and go back home. If you don’t hurry, the rain will stop you!’” 45 And sure enough, the sky was soon black with clouds. A heavy wind brought a terrific rainstorm, and Ahab left quickly for Jezreel.

We read from the book of James –
James 5:17 Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for the next three and a half years! 18 Then he prayed for rain, and down it poured. The grass turned green, and the crops began to grow again.
James uses Elijah as an example of what it means to pray with power. What then was it about his prayers that made them so powerful?

There Was Purpose in His Prayers
Prayer means to come near with desire and to ask. There was a need for rain and so seven times Elijah fell on his face and asked God to send rain. If there is a need in your life, don’t be ashamed to go to God and ask.

There Was Passion in His Prayers
The King James Version says that Elijah – “cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees…” Though we don’t always have to fall to our knees when we pray, the posture we take in prayer is often an indication of our passion. Elijah’s posture revealed that he was:
  • Humble before the Lord
  • Sincere in his request
  • Utterly helpless without the Lord’s assistance
Scripture teaches us that God loves to answer the desperate prayer.

There Was Perseverance in His Prayers
James tells us – “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16) The phrase “effectual fervent” means to be at work or at business. Powerful praying is hard work and Elijah labored in his prayers. It was not a half-hearted prayer mingled in with all the other activities. It was a man on his face praying until there was rain.
Perseverance is an important ingredient in the life of someone who has power with God. Consider these notes taken from the journal of John Wesley-
  • Sunday, A.M., May 5    Preached in St. Anne’s. Was asked not to come back anymore.
  • Sunday, P.M., May 5     Preached in St. John’s. Deacons said “Get out and stay out.”
  • Sunday, A.M., May 12    Preached in St. Jude’s. Can’t go back there, either.
  • Sunday, A.M., May 19    Preached in St. Somebody Else’s. Deacons called special meeting and said I couldn’t return.
  • Sunday, P.M., May 19    Preached on street. Kicked off street.
  • Sunday, A.M., May 26    Preached in meadow. Chased out of meadow as bull was turned loose during service.
  • Sunday, A.M., June 2    Preached out at the edge of town. Kicked off the highway.
  • Sunday, P.M., June 2    Afternoon, preached in a pasture. Ten thousand people came out to hear me.
    (from Sermon Illustrations.com)
There is nothing more powerful on the face of this earth than a man or woman of God who is sold out to Jesus and who believes in the power of prayer, and who asks, seeks and knocks until God’s hand moves.

This week Kingdom Life Family, you are encouraged to P.U.S.H. - Pray Until Something Happens.  May you see the hand of God at work in every aspect of your life.
Be blessed!

Streams in the Desert

He has given us his very great and precious promises. (2 Peter 1:4)

When a shipbuilder erects a boat, does he do so only to keep it on the scaffolding? No, he builds it to sail the seas and to weather the storms. In fact, if he does not think of strong winds
and hurricanes as he builds it, he is a poor shipbuilder.

In the same way, when God made you a believer, He meant to test you. And when He gave you promises and asked you to trust them, He made His promises suitable for times of storms and high seas. Do you believe that some of His promises are counterfeit, similar to a life vest that looks good in the store but is of no use in the sea?

We have all seen swords that are beautiful but are useless in war, or shoes made for decoration but not for walking. Yet God’s shoes are made of iron and brass, and we can walk all the way to heaven in them, without ever wearing them out. And we could swim the Atlantic a thousand times in His life vest, with no fear of ever sinking. His Word of promise is meant to be tried and tested.

There is nothing Christ dislikes more than for His people to publicly profess Him and then not use Him. He loves for us to make use of Him, for His covenant blessings are not simply
meant to be looked at but should be appropriated. Our Lord Jesus has been given to us for our present use. Are you making use of Him as you should?

O beloved, I plead with you not to treat God’s promises as something to be displayed in a museum but to use them as everyday sources of comfort. And whenever you have a time
of need, trust the Lord.

Charles H. Spurgeon

Go to the depths of God’s promise,
And claim whatsoever you will;
The blessing of God will not fail you,
His Word He will surely fulfill.
How can God say no to something He has promised?

Believing and Speaking God's Truth in our Lives

“It is written: ‘I believed; therefore I have spoken.’ With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak.” (2 Corinthians 4:13)

Negative self-talk is real weakness in me. Whether it’s fear about my “pain of the day,” discouragement about my inabilities, battling with depression, or countless other things, many of my thoughts do not fit the description of victorious Christian living.

I am currently working on the Beth Moore Bible study Believing God. She mentions the effectiveness of verbally speaking God’s Word. Of course God’s Word is active when we read or meditate on it silently, but there is something very powerful in verbally speaking His truths.

Satan cannot read our minds but he can hear our voice. When God’s Word goes forth, Satan trembles and flees.
If I truly believe God’s Word in faith, speaking it out loud confirms that truth in my spirit. I have seen God work miraculously as I verbalize my faith through Scripture. If I am constantly speaking negative, untrue thoughts to myself, I actually contribute to my health problems and see myself as Satan wants me to rather than as who I am in Christ.

Proverbs 15:4 says that the tongue of the wise is a tree of life but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Many times Satan’s deceitful lies have crushed my spirit–my life is hopeless, I can’t endure this pain any longer, I’m useless and insignificant. But speaking the truth of God’s Word does bring healing–perhaps not physical healing but a healing of my attitude, bringing hope and the ability to persevere with faith.
I have collected various Scriptures that apply to my most difficult struggles. When I am tempted to dwell on negative thoughts, I read aloud the verses that speak truth to that particular situation. God has accomplished mighty things through this action and I trust in faith that He will do more.

“The Word that God speaks is alive and full of power (making it active, operative, energizing, and effective)” Hebrews 4:12 AMP. Thank God that His Word never returns void (Isaiah 55:11).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me the self-discipline to speak Your Word to myself, for Your Word is truth and Your truth sets me free. Amen.

A Different Kind of Peace

Matthew 10:34-37

"Don't think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace. I came to bring a sword. I have come to make this happen: 'The people in a person's own family will be his enemies. A son will be against his father. A daughter will be against her mother. A daughter-in-law will be against her mother-in-law.' Any person that loves his father or mother more than he loves me is not good enough to follow me. Any person who loves his son or daughter more than he loves me is not good enough to follow me." (ERV) Full Text
Key Thought
Sometimes Jesus' words to us are not soft words. Jesus does bring peace, but it is not the kind of peace that is an absence of decisions, conflict, or hardship. His presence demands that we either choose him as Lord or reject him entirely. He will allow us no middle ground and no rival for our hearts. Jesus wants us to know that we will have some family members who will choose to not follow and not believe in him. In fact, some may even have family members that give them up to authorities to spare themselves. For times such as this, we must commit our hearts to follow the Lord!

Today's Prayer

Heavenly Father, give me the courage and soul to choose to place Jesus as the central controlling relationship in my life. I want to honor him and serve him with a loyalty that has no rival. Please give me an undivided heart and a spirit of faithfulness. In the name of Jesus of Nazareth I pray. Amen.

Sweatin' the Small Stuff

“‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied.
‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’
Luke 19:17  (NIV)

--We need to pray and obey God’s leading when He speaks to us. Obedience is not to be an occasional event for us; it is to be our way of life. There’s a big difference between people who are willing to obey God daily and those who are willing to obey only to get out of trouble. God certainly shows people how to get out of trouble, but He bestows abundant blessings on those who decide to live wholeheartedly for Him and who make obedience to Him their lifestyle. The only pathway to true peace is obedience to God.

Many people obey God in the big issues, but they aren’t aware that obedience in the little things makes a difference in His plan for their lives. The Bible says plainly that if we are not faithful in the little things, we will never be made rulers over much (see Luke 19:17). There is no reason for God to trust us with a major responsibility if we are not going to be faithful to do the little things He has asked us to do.

I strongly urge you to be obedient to God even in the smallest of things. A sixteenth-century monk called Brother Lawrence was well known for walking continually in the presence of God. He said that he was pleased to pick up a piece of straw from the ground in obedience to God and because he loved Him.

In the verse for today..If we follow His guidance and are pleased to do each little thing He asks of us, then He will open His wisdom to us, and we will have more revelation than we could ever imagine.

God’s word for you today: If you are faithful in little things, God will make you ruler over greater things.

Pursue God's Presence

"COME TO ME CONTINUALLY. I am meant to be the Center of your consciousness, the Anchor of your soul. Your mind will wander from Me, but the question is how far you allow it to wander. An anchor on a short rope lets a boat drift only slightly before the taut line tugs the boat back toward the center. Similarly, as you drift away from Me, My Spirit within you gives a tug, prompting you to return to Me. As you become increasingly attuned to My Presence, the length of rope on your soul's Anchor is shortened. You wander only a short distance before feeling that inner tug--telling you to return to your true Center in Me."

Hebrews 6:19; 1 John 2:28; Matthew 22:37
